Job Description

This position could either be full-time or part-time, depending on candidates’ availability. The right part-time candidate may eventually be transitioned to a full-time role. Remote work may be an option in the long-term but the worker must commit to working side-by-side with the supervisor for a period of 6-months to 1 year. Specific hours of work can be negotiated but will need to remain on a predictable weekly schedule.

Points Consulting (PC) is looking for an economic analyst to assist with a variety of research tasks on our consulting projects for clients in the fields of higher education, economic development, workforce development and real estate analytics. Tasks could include each of the following:

  • Accessing socioeconomic and real estate data from a variety of government and proprietary databases
  • Cleaning, formatting, and manipulating data into tables and charts appropriate for presentation to clients
  • Producing narrative summary of data collected
  • Reading and acquiring key information from a variety of documents focused on strategic and comprehensive planning, planning and zoning, and related topics
  • Conducting and taking notes during qualitative data gathering activities (i.e.: in-depth interviews, focus groups, etc.)
  • Developing slide decks for communicating with external audiences
  • Conducting web-based research on a variety of community/economic development and real estate topics and trends and summarizing research for inclusion in research reports
  • Administrative duties, as needed (e.g.: scheduling, proofreading, notetaking, social media posts, etc.)

Qualifications

PC is looking for somebody with strong interest and some past exposure to economics and economic theories. Moreover, the right candidate will have an ingrained desire to understand economic and social issues deeply. For this position, formal education is less important than the right mental orientation and a willingness to learn.

Relevant qualifications include:

  • Some proficiency with MS office products, particularly Excel, Word and Power Point
  • Experience finding data and information on the internet from root sources
  • Functional level understanding of mathematic and statistical concepts (i.e.: Algebra, and Statistics)
  • Ability to write in a whimsical and engaging fashion

Educational Background

We are not looking to hire primarily based on educational accomplishment. That said, educational backgrounds with relevant overlap with this role include: economics, finance, business, statistics, public policy, economic/community development, and regional planning.

Future Expectations

Qualifications

PC is looking for somebody with demonstrable experience with economic analysis and an ingrained desire to understand economic and social issues deeply. Both relevant education and work experience are applicable to this consideration

Relevant qualifications include:

  • Highly proficient with MS office products, particularly Excel, Word and Power Point
  • Experience finding and analyzing socioeconomic data from government websites (e.g.: Census, BLS, BEA, etc.)
  • Equivalent to an undergraduate level understanding of statistics and economics
  • Ability to write in a whimsical and engaging fashion
  • A pleasant disposition and comfort interacting with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds
  • Bonus: experience with any of the following software tools: STATA, SPSS, R, and Tableau

Job Description

Points Consulting engages in a wide variety of socioeconomic research and analysis projects. On occasion, we need more resources to complete this work. We regularly use subcontractors provided that they have the skills, time, and initiative to do quality work.Not sure you’re a good fit?No pressure to do a ton of research and put together a cover letter. Options for subcontractors are as broad as our work itself. That said, we can generally predict the categories of needs and have divided them into the following categories.:

Analytical Skills:

  • Economists, econometricians, statisticians, economic analysts and financial analysts
  • Qualitative researchers

Adjacent Skills:

  • Management consulting/change management
  • Facilitation (e.g. conducting focus groups and interviews)
  • Experts in various economic development topics
  • Survey writing and analysis
  • Writers, editors, and proofreaders
  • Graphic designers (specifically for long-form brochures and studies)

Qualifications

We understand that many gig workers are working full-time for another organization or they have other life commitments. We are conscious of these limitations and do our best to be flexible with our gig workers. That said, there are a few principals that apply to any work agreement:

  • If you commit to doing the work, you get it done
  • You must also be proactive at communicating with fellow project team members across time and geographic space
  • As we are flexible with you, we expect the same from you

Future Expectations

In the right circumstances it is possible for a gig worker to translate into an employee of PC, but the fit would have to be just right.
